ARTISTIC DIRECTOR: Maria Giulia Grazzini

The Cultural Association “Il Parnaso”, in the name of its Artistic director Maria Giulia Grazzini and in collaboration with the Municipality of Montecatini Terme, is staging the IV International Opera Competition “M.O.A.” for singing roles from the opera Madama Butterfly and free choice of repertoire on 21st, 22nd and 23rd August in Montecatini Terme; a Tuscan Spa-town which offered hospitality in the past to the great composers of Italian opera such as Verdi, Leoncavallo and Puccini

Article 1

The Competition is open to male and female Italian and foreign opera singers who are aged 18 or over on 21st August 2019.

The competition is divided into two sections:

  • Section A: Roles from the opera Madama Butterfly
  • Section B: Free choice of repertoire

When registering the singer must choose which section to participate in.

Please enclose the following with your application:

  • A completed application form (available to download from this page)
  • Proof of payment of the application / Competition fee: € 120,00 (not reimbursable).
  • A photocopy of your passport / I.D. document
  • A passport-size photograph (JPEG format)
  • An up-to-date copy of professional resume (maximum two pages) in Italian or in English

Application deadline: 23:59 (GMT + 1) on 12nd August 2019 (candidates submitting late applications will be excluded from the competition).

The application procedures may be modified at the Director’s discretion.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Application implies the acceptance of all regulations.

Candidate (name and surname).

A copy of confirmation of payment should be included with the application. The application will not be considered valid if the fee has not been paid, and the application will not be considered by the examining committee even if complete in all other respects.

 

Article 4

Candidates admitted to the Competition must meet in the Council Room in the Town Hall of Montecatini Terme on 21st August 2019 at 10:00 a.m.

The Artistic Director and the Jury will decide in what order the candidates should perform.

The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional performances during all parts of the audition process.

 

Article 5

The competition will take place as follows:

The preliminary round is closed to the public and will be held on Wednesday 21st August from 10:00 a.m. onwards.

The semi-finals are closed to the public and will be held on Thursday 22nd August from 10:00 a.m. onwards.

The finals are open to the public and will take place as a Gala performance with orchestra. They will be held on Friday 23rd August at the Tettuccio Spa in Montecatini Terme at 21:30.p.m.

 

Article 6

Section A (Roles from the opera Madama Butterfly)

All candidates must present 4 arias chosen from the 19th and 20th Century opera repertoire, one of which preferably by Giuseppe Verdi + the complete chosen role (It must be learnt by heart)

 

“Main roles”: Cio-Cio-San – Pinkerton – Suzuki – Sharpless

Required repertoire for auditioning for a specific role:

  • Cio-Cio-San: “ Un bel dì vedremo”; “Scuoti quella fronda”
  • Pinkerton: “Addio fiorito asil”; “Amore o grillo”
  • Suzuki: “Scuoti quella fronda”
  • Sharpless: “Amore o grillo”

In the preliminary round, each candidate must sing a free choice aria among the presented ones, performed in original language and key.

The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional aria.

In the semifinals, applicants must sing the required aria of “Madama Butterfly” chosen by the panel.

The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional aria.

In the finals, candidates must sing with orchestra an aria chosen by the panel or another aria agreed with the Jury.

 

“Other roles”: Goro – The Bonze, Cio-Cio-San’s uncle – Prince Yamadori – The Imperial Commissioner – Kate Pinkerton – The Official Registrar

In the preliminary round, each candidate must sing a free choice aria among the presented ones, performed in original language and key. The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional aria.

In the semifinals, applicants must sing parts of “Madama Butterfly” chosen by the panel. The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional aria.

In the finals, candidates must sing with orchestra 1 aria chosen from the panel of required arias Section B or another aria agreed with the Jury.

 

Article 7

Section B (Free choice of repertoire)

All candidates must present 3 arias taken from the 19th and 20th Century opera repertoire, one of which preferably by Giacomo Puccini + 1 aria chosen from the panel of required arias.

In the preliminary round, each candidate must sing a free choice aria among the presented ones, performed in original language and key. The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional aria.

In the semifinals, applicants must submit 1 aria in the original language and key chosen by the Jury among the three free choice arias and the required aria.

In the finals, candidates must sing with orchestra 1 aria chosen by the Jury by the panel.

 

Article 8

Participants are responsible for the cost of transport and accommodation.

Prices for accommodation in our partner hotels are available on request.

 

Article 9

The Jury will allow participation to the successive rounds with a simple indication of suitability.

The final judgment will instead be expressed with a numerical points system resulting from the average marks given by individual jury members.

All decisions of the Jury are final.

 

Article 10

A piano accompanist will be available for competitors free of charge.

Competitors must bring the scores of their chosen pieces.

 

Article 11

The Jury is composed of singers, artistic directors, theatrical agents, critics and journalists of international repute, coordinated by a President.

The Jury may grant an “Honourable-mention” award to those participants who demonstrate outstanding potential in terms of technique and performing ability.

Dr.Josef Hussek, artistic consultant “Easter Salzburg Festival”, will recommend the winners to certain Opera Houses in Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

The Diploma Ceremony will take place at the end of the Gala performance (23rd August 2019).

The names of the winners will be published in the press and notice will be given to opera companies.

A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants.

 

Article 13

The Association “Il Parnaso” reserves the right to film and record all competition activities for performances using videotape, tape, CD-DVD, films, Internet use , Radio and TV, with no obligation whatsoever towards any of the participants. Participation in the Competition implies full consent for the use of images and sound from events from the entire course, and prize performances for eventual radio, TV or Internet broadcasts, with no rights or fees of any kind being paid under any circumstances.

The above regulations are published in Italian, English, Russian and Chinese. In case of controversy only the Italian version should be considered valid.
