The Cultural Association ”Il Parnaso”, the Artistic director Maria Giulia Grazzini, in collaboration with the Municipality of Montecatini Terme is staging the III International Opera Competition “M.O.A.” for singing roles from the opera La Traviata and free choice of repertoire on 22nd,23rd and 24th August in Montecatini Terme; a Tuscan Spa-town which offered hospitality in the past to the great composers of Italian opera such as Verdi, Leoncavallo and Puccini.

Article 1

The Competition is open to male and female Italian and foreign opera singers who are aged 18 or over on 22nd August 2018.

The competition is divided into two sections:

  • Section A: Roles from the opera La Traviata
  • Section B: Free choice of repertoire

When registering the singer must choose which section to participate in.

Please enclose the following with your application:

  • A completed application form (available to download from this page)
  • Proof of payment of the application / Competition fee: € 100, 00 (not reimbursable).
  • A photocopy of passport / I.D. document
  • A passport-size photograph (JPEG format)
  • An up-to-date copy of professional resume (maximum two pages) in Italian or in English

Application deadline: 23:59 (GMT + 1) on 30th June 2018 (candidates submitting late applications will be excluded from the competition).

The application procedures may be modified at the Director’s discretion.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Application implies the acceptance of all regulations.

Candidate (name and surname).

A copy of confirmation of payment should be included with the application. The application will not be considered valid if the fee has not been paid, and the application will not be considered by the examining committee even if complete in all other respects.

 

Article 4

Candidates admitted to the Competition must meet in the Council Room in the Town Hall of Montecatini Terme on 23rd August 2018 at 10:00 a.m.

The Artistic Director and the Jury will decide in what order the candidates should perform.

The Jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance and to request any additional performances during all parts of the audition process.

 

Article 5

The competition will take place as follows:

The preliminary round is closed to the public and will be held on Wednesday 22nd August from 10:00 a.m. onwards.

The semi-finals are closed to the public and will be held on Thursday 23rd August from 10:00 a.m. onwards.

The finals are open to the public and will take place as a Gala performance with orchestra. They will be held on Friday 24th August at the Tettuccio Spa in Montecatini Terme at 21:30.p.m.

 

Article 6

Section A (Roles from the opera La Traviata)

All candidates must know the complete chosen role.

 

“Main roles”

  • Required repertoire for auditioning for a specific role:
  • Violetta: “E’ strano…..”
  • Alfredo Germont: “Lunge da lei……”
  • Giorgio Germont: “Di Provenza il mar il suol…..”

In the preliminary round, each candidate must present the required aria of the chosen role performed with recitativo and cabaletta + one 19th-Century opera aria performed in original language and key.

In the semifinals, applicants must sing parts of “La Traviata” chosen by the panel.

In the finals, candidates must sing an aria chosen by the panel among those previously performed.

 

“Other roles”

In the preliminary round, each candidate must present one aria with recitativo and cabaletta, preferably by Giuseppe Verdi + one 19th-Century opera aria performed in original language and key.

In the semifinals, applicants must sing parts of “La Traviata” chosen by the panel.

In the finals, candidates must sing an aria chosen by the panel among those previously performed.

 

Article 7

Section B (Free choice of repertoire)

In the preliminary round, each candidate must present two arias performed in the original language and key.

1 aria should be performed as a recitativo and cabaletta, preferably by Giuseppe Verdi.

In the semifinals, applicants must submit two arias which were not performed in the first round, in the original language and key, preferably by Giacomo Puccini.

In the finals, candidates must sing an aria chosen by the panel among those previously performed.

 

Article 8

Participants are responsible for the cost of transport and accommodation.

Prices for accommodation in our partner hotels are available on request.

 

Article 9

The Jury will allow participation to the successive rounds with a simple indication of suitability.

The final judgment will instead be expressed with a numerical points system resulting from the average marks given by individual jury members.

All decisions of the Jury are final.

 

Article 10

A piano accompanist will be made available for competitors free of charge.

Competitors must bring the scores of their chosen pieces.

 

Article 11

The Jury is composed of singers, artistic directors, theatrical agents, critics and journalists of international repute, coordinated by a President.

 

Article 12

Awards winners Section A

Violetta (soprano): 500 euro + Diploma of Merit

Alfredo Germont (tenor): 400 euro + Diploma of Merit

Giorgio Germont (baritone): 350 euro + Diploma of Merit

Flora Bervoix/Annina (soprano or mezzosoprano): 200 euro + Diploma of Merit

Gastone, Visconte di Letorieres (tenor): 200 euro + Diploma of Merit

Barone Douphol (baritone): 200 euro + Diploma of Merit

Il marchese d’Obigny (basso): 200 euro + Diploma of Merit

Il dottor Grenvil (basso): 200 euro + Diploma of Merit

The winners undertake to perform their respective roles in the production of the opera La Traviata to be held on August 2019 in Montecatini Terme as part of the opera season Montecatini Opera Festival. The winners will be offered free accommodation. No payment will be due for rehearsals.

Failure to comply with the regulation implies the exclusion of the candidate from the prizes.

The jury reserves the right not to award one or more roles /awards.

The jury reserves the right to complete any vacant roles with winners of previous M.O. A. competitions, with winners of international competitions or with selected singers chosen by the artistic direction of M.O.A.

 

Article 13

Awards winners Section B

3 Prizes of 400 Euros each + Diploma of Merit

The winners undertake to perform in a concert as part of the opera season Montecatini Opera Festival 2019 at a date to be determined.

M.O.A. is responsible for the cost of accommodation.

The Diploma Ceremony will take place at the end of the Gala performance (24th August 2018)

The Prize giving Ceremony will take place at the end of each production or concert.

Failure to comply implies the exclusion of the candidate from the prizes.

 

Article 14

The winners will be offered other concerts and engagements by the partners of the M.O.A.

The names of the winners will be published in the press and notice will be given to opera companies.

A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants.

 

Article 15

The Association “Il Parnaso” reserves the right to film and record all competition activities for performances using videotape, tape, CD-DVD, films, Internet use , Radio and TV, with no obligation whatsoever towards any of the participants. Participation in the Competition implies full consent for the use of images and sound from events from the entire course, and prize performances for eventual radio, TV or Internet broadcasts, with no rights or fees of any kind being paid under any circumstances.

According to Italian law No. 196 dated 30/06/2003, the candidate’s personal data will be collected and processed solely for the purposes of the current selection as well as for similar future selections.

 

Article 18

The above regulations are published in Italian, English and Russian. In case of controversy only the Italian version should be considered valid.
